Morgan Adams and her slave, William Shaw, are on a quest to recover the three portions of a treasure map. Unfortunately, the final portion is held by her murderous uncle, Dawg. Her crew is skeptical of her leadership abilities, so she must complete her quest before they mutiny against her. This is made yet more difficult by the efforts of the British crown to end her piratical raids.
A female pirate and her companion race against their rivals to find a hidden island that contains a fabulous treasure.
When I saw this movie, I was carried away by the excitement of the adventure. I have waited a very long time to finally see a heroine as strong, fascinating, and likeable as Morgan Adams (Geena Davis). Her character is a wonderful change from most female characters I&#39;ve seen. Davis is in a perfect role as a rough pirate woman.<br/><br/>Throughout the movie I remember hearing the audience cheering and clapping as the pirate companions foiled their foes. Everyone seemed to be electrified by the pure pirate adventure and chattered excitedly to one another as they exited the theater. Imagine my surprise when I heard how lousy this movie did in the box office.<br/><br/>I believe this movie&#39;s box office failure was a prime example of bad-timing and scathing reviews. Such reviews made me wonder if any of the reviewers had actually watched the movie! Pirate adventures are meant to be simple – all treasure hunt and swashbuckling style. The incredible, well-done explosions and death defying stunts made this movie an edge of the seat experience.<br/><br/>Anyone who has ever enjoyed pirate adventure stories or role-played in treasure hunting genres will truly enjoy the fun ride of this movie.<br/><br/>Sometimes a treasure hunt is just a treasure hunt! Enjoy it!
I was only interested in seeing this movie because it set a record for biggest financial loss of any movie ever. This seemed to be inaccurate because the movie &quot;Zyzzyx Road&quot; was the worst performing film in history, managing to make only $30 at the box office. Yes, literally thirty dollars. I guess this movie still ranks ahead seeing as how it actually lost more money than any movie in history. With all that being said, it&#39;s definitely a bad movie, but not really one of the worst ever made. The main problem with the film is that its plot is too basic. It features pirates looking for treasure and that&#39;s mostly it.<br/><br/>I think the only thing they do that&#39;s actually out of the ordinary is that they have a female captain. That was interesting, but they don&#39;t really do much with it. Yeah, I could see from a mile away that this one character they introduced was going to be her love interest. The movie seems to use slow motion really badly. It does get better, but it starts off so cheap looking. So yeah, I can&#39;t recommend it, but for a film that did so horribly at the box office, it really didn&#39;t have anything too offensive. Has any pirate movie ever been rated R? **
Cutthroat Island is a mindless diversion. If, for whatever reason, you decide to go, maintain low expectations. Hoping for more than a bunch of loud bangs and ridiculous dialogue will rob Cutthroat Island of its amusement value.
In order to get the PG rating for the theatrical release, more than a minute had to be removed, four more seconds got lost on the VHS release. Something that is also very interesting about the British VHS are the many instances of audio censorships. Punches, kicks and other fight audio effects were partially removed or just turned down in volume. This usually does not even catch the viewer&#39;s ear, however, all in all a certain censoring method can be made out. Interestingly enough, not a single one of these changes were applied to the British DVD version.<br/><br/>When the DVD was released in 2003, it would have been possible to release it uncut with the BBFC 15 rating, but the producers decided against it. The version that was given to the BBFC was already censored. Some of the previously cut scenes were put back into the movie, but others were removed instead. Still, one more scene (a headbutt) had to be removed in order to have the censoring agency let the film pass through without complaints.
